Element wallpapers

The elements in this section are fire, ice, snow and water. These elements adopt variable shapes, textures and colors. Water and fire have an elusive appearance unless you take a photograph. They carve our landscapes and make them unique places by the way they modified the ground. They are often associated to weather and change with seasons.

Fire

Fire is a rapid oxidation of a material produced by a chemical process of combustion. It produces a flame, which is the visible portion. It also produces a significant amount of heat. In general, a fire will start with combustible material, heat above the flash point (or ignition temperature) and oxygen.

The temperature of fire could be 1,000 °C (1,800 °F) for a candle. The temperature of the flame with other substances will produce different colors. Most of the time, fire produces smoke and carbon from the combustion.

Fire is considered to be very destructive, but also a great tool with a key role in the development of humanity.

Ice

Ice is the solid state of water. Water turns into ice below 0°C (32°F) at standard atmospheric pressure. It is formed by frozen water directly or precipitation such as snow. It is generally transparent. It can also be opaque in case there are air bubble inclusions.

Ice has a major influence on the earth's climate. It also affects the geology and landscapes.

Because of its lower density than liquid water, ice floats on water.

Snow desktop wallpapers

Snow

Snow is a form of precipitation that falls from clouds. It has the form of snowflakes made from crystallized water ice. It is more present towards the northern and southern hemispheres and during the winter. Due to temperatures lowering with higher altitude, it is also found on mountain tops in regions where there is usually no snow at sea level. Snow occurs below the freezing point of 0°C (32°F) where there would be rain. Large accumulations of snow can eventually create ice in the form of glacier.

Water desktop wallpapers

Water

Water covers about 71% of the Earth's surface. About 97% of water is found in oceans and seas. The freshwater counts for less than 3%. Of that amount, about 99% is found underground and in frozen water. That leaves tiny percentage of the total amount of water accessible to people.

Water boils at 100 °C (212 °F).

It is often associated to life because there is no life without water. Because of what it represents, water is involved in many political conflicts and wars. As populations grow, the demand for water tends to increase creating more conflicts.
